On July 23, 2021, Acting U.S. Attorney Stephanie M. Hinds motioned to dismiss the case against Xin Wang, a visiting researcher on neurological diseases from China at the University of California, San Francisco. On the same day, U.S. District Judge James Donato granted the motion to dismiss.
On June 11, 2020, the Department of Justice announced the arrest of Xin Wang. This was followed by an announcement that Wang was indicted for one count of visa fraud on July 23, 2020. If convicted, he faced a maximum statutory penalty of ten years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
