For a brief period from July to September 2020, the meetings were recorded and shared publicly. We have since reverted back to an off-record format unless with explicit permission of the speakers.

During the first APA Justice monthly meeting of 2023, Rep. Judy Chu, Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, reviewed the accomplishments of 2022 which was highlighted by the end of the "China Initiative" and Sherry Chen's historic settlement after 10 years of fighting for justice.
"Despite all of these wins, we know the work continues to ensure that we are engaging with our partners, the Administration across federal agencies, and my colleagues at Congress; to ensure that our communities are not facing anti-Asian discrimination and racial profiling. To that end, CAPAC will continue to prioritize calling out blatantly xenophobic anti-China rhetoric and pushing back on policies that unfairly target Chinese American communities, which we unfortunately are expecting to see much more in the year ahead," Rep. Chu said. The APA Justice Task Force was formed in 2015 in response to Rep. Chu's call for a platform to connect elected officials with concerned organizations and individuals. It is dedicated to build a sustainable ecosystem that addresses racial profiling concerns and to facilitate, inform, and advocate on selected issues related to justice and fairness for the Asian Pacific American community. |

Hong Peng, wife of Kansas University Professor Franklin Tao, spoke about her family's dire situation after Professor Steven Pei's introduction. As the first case of Chinese American scientists going to trial under the "China Initiative," Dr. Franklin Tao and Hong are determined to fight the charges and clear his name even though it has bankrupted their family. This is the first of many cases going the trial under the "China Initiative."

July 6, 2020 APA Justice Meeting

Due to heightened interest in Professor Margaret Lewis' talk on the Department of Justice's "China Initiative," the July 6 APA Justice meeting was conducted under the webinar format instead of the customary conference call format. It allowed broader participation.
We thank Professor Lewis for her insightful talk; Professor Xiaoxing Xi for leading off the Q&A discussions; Krystal Ka'ai for her CAPAC updates; John Yang on the latest of the Anti-Asian Profiling Project; and Gregg Orton on NCAPA's 2020 National Policy Platform.
We thank UCA for the use of their Zoom services for this meeting. We also thank Professor Steven Pei and Vincent Wang for their behind-the-scene work to make the meeting possible and successful.
