On January 21, 2022, Professor Simon Saw-Teong Ang and the government filed a plea agreement in the Western District Court of Arkansas. The agreement stipulates that Professor Ang pleas guilty to one count out of 59 charges - making a false statement to a federal agent (U.S. Code 1001). The government will dismiss the other 58 counts upon the Court's approval of the agreement.
On July 29, 2020, the Department of Justice announced that Professor Simon Saw-Teong Ang, 63, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, was indicted by a federal grand jury in the Western District of Arkansas. In a superseding indictment on July 28, 2021, Professor Ang was charged for 55 counts of wire fraud, two counts of false statement, and two counts of false statements on application and use of passport.
His case is listed under the "China Initiative," launched by the Department of Justice in November 2018 purportedly to combat economic espionage and trade secret theft. None of the actual charges against Professor Ang are related to economic espionage or trade secret theft.
Ang was a professor and researcher at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas since 1988. At the University of Arkansas, Professor Ang served as the Director of the High Density Electronics Center (HiDEC) until about May 8, 2020. He was fired by the University of Arkansas less than 2 months after his arrest.
A jury trial of Professor Ang was scheduled to begin on February 7, 2022. In a plea agreement, Professor Ang pleaded guilty to one count of makeing false statement. The other 58 counts were dismissed. Professor Ang was sentenced to one year and one day in prison in June 2022.
